As Japanese electronics flooded the market product manufacturing was outsourced to Japan. This deck appears to be made by TEAC for Concord. It is almost identical to the TEAC A-1550W except, that the paneling is slightly different and that this deck adds a set of external amplified speakers. Just like the early TEAC decks this one was made in the good old days of quality and definitely still carries some of the quality characteristics form before Concertone became TEAC. We are counting 1966 as a year when first solid state equipment found it's way into audio equpment and features unique vintage sound. At the time this recorder was among the finest tape decks available and offered features rarely found. Most decks at the time featured 1 Motor 2 head desgns - This machine features 3 motors, relais transport control and has 4 heads (3 for one side with monitor function, the other 4 th head is for reverse playback). It is made ruggedly and features a relais controlled 3 motor transport with autoreverse function - so it will play in both directions without the need to turn the tape over. Transport and electronics in this machine are actually 2 separate sub chassis. This machine is in perfect working condition performs smoothly and was completely overhauled for years of trouble free service to come. Belts and many the electrlytic cpacitors in the amplifier electronics were replaced. Feature Details: 3 (4) head - 3 Motor Transport Works with reels up to 7" Switcheable ECHO function: Mono or stereo echos Will play and record at 7 1/2, 3 3/4, IPS Will record and play back in quarter track fromat Will record in stero or mono (mono: 1 track at the time w. overdubbing functions and echo!) 4 heads: 3 for forward direction: 1 Erase head. 1 Recording head, 1 Playback head, plus 1 Playback head for reverse play All functions are soldenoid and relay controlled - there is a plug in back for a wired remote control The unit provides a 2 pairs of stereo inputs (mic an dline level), that can be mixed together Each of the 4 input chanels is controlled by a separate potentiometer section. The unit provides a headphone jack which unfortunately can oly be used with high impedance headphones (design flaw) and a source / tape switch to monitor the just recorded signal for acurate recordings The unit includes a pair of detacheable amplified speakers (shown partially) that plug into their own jacks at the machine's side panel. 1950 European made Professional Portable Reel to Reel Recorder 2 Speed Vaccum Tube recorder ![]() Refurbished - works nicely and will perform reliably Vacuum Tube Based amplfier circuitry Tape speeds: 1 7/8 IPS, 3 3/4 IPS Reel size: up to 3" 1/4" Mic input & 1/4 transformer isolated speaker / aux output Blue-Green Magic eye type bar level meter for recording Mechanical Input for fast rewind cue function. AC synchronous motor Speed shifted while playing and works very nicely A very professional touch and feel to thsi deck. Description: This Deck to it's interior date stamp was made in 1950 in Italy and was meant for daily steno work in the office but is also advertised as a recorder for music and speech such as used in the field when recording interviews for the newspaper. The good old days of quality very well manifested hrere! The original carry bag, empty reel, microphone and owners manual are included. The manual advertises a buch of accessories including a powerr convertor to use the deck in the car. I would guess this is probably among the samllest taped decks at the time and it was made all with nice quality parts. It was built to last and it's design implements super heavy duty contruction - All mechanical parts are metal. I restored the unit so that it is fully and reliably working again. It was pretty hard to work on as quite compact. The unit had jacks of an obsolete size, which I upgraded to standard 1/4" Also: The power transformer in the unit is based on a taped single winding, wich means it does not have a true seconday and that the chassis is not insulated . Thus I added a grounded power chord to ground the chassis with a plug, that can and shoudl only be inserted in the way it is desingedn for, as to keep HOT off the chassis. If using this deck for musical applications: NEVER USE A GROUND LIFT - and: ALWAYS CONNECT to a GROUNDED POWER JACK. Other than that: This lilttle deck is truly amazing! Work performed to present this machine in excellent and fully working condition: Replaced nearlty all capacitors throughout the unit with high quality parts. Completely overhauled mechanical parts. A complete cleaning and lubrication job on all mechanical parts - which inclcuded rework of all rubber parts. All potentiometers and swtiches, trimpots, tube sockets and contacts deoxydized and lubricated, replaced the pinchroller, cleaned and demagnetized all elements in the tape path; upgraded obesolete jacks with standard 1/4". all adjustments checked and tweaked. Thorough and complete test. About 20 hours of labor plus parts went into this deck. Condition: Excellent working condition - machine recently completely overhauled to fully work in every aspect. The heads of this machine show only minor wear, so perform excellently. However, there is one shortcoming: The main ilder wheel of this deck has a bump in it. While the effect of it in performance is barely noticeable it generates a clatter / running noise when the machien is running. The remedy would be to have the idler wheel re-coated with new rubber, for which I would add about $125 to the cost of the deck. As I already spend way too much work time on refurbishing this wonderful deck - exceeding my asking price by far, I want to leave it up to you whether you wanted to pay for that. Physical Condition: Very Clean and excellent. However: The plastic casing and the plexiglass lid have more or less noticeable cracks as the machine was not packd properly when shipping it to me. But: Overall cosmetic condition: 9/10 Lot: 1 Geloso G255 StenOtape portable professional vacuum tube tape recorder, original leather carry bag (one handle broken), the original owenrs manual, microphone (replaced chord as cracked and added 1/4" plug), the original Geloso 3" empty tape reel, a 2" tape. Price: $465.00 (reflects actual work time spent to refurbish this deck) A very rare and special Find! - Once sold, opportunity gone forever! |
1950's Webcor US made Portable Vacuum Tube Reel to Reel Recorder 2 Speed ![]() Refurbished - works nicely and will perform reliably Tape speeds: 3 3/4 IPS, 7 1/2 IPS, Reel size: up to 7" 1/4" Mic input & 1/4 transformer isolated speaker / aux output AC synchronous motor Operation Instruction at the inside of it's lid Power requirements: AC 117 V 60 Hz 70 W. Microphone included. Mono. Description: This Deck is good old USA made quality. Simple yet rugged and nice tube tone. Listen to the the old tapes that the grandparents recorded, or make your own vacuum tube recordigns in vintage sound. The deck inside the casing looks almost like new and also judging by the condition of it's mechnics I do not beleive this deck was used very much. Original tubes in great condition and the deck was refurbished to provide reliable performance for years to come. Work performed to present this tape deck in excellent and fully working condition: Replaced capacitors (all in power supply) and a defective resistor. Completely went through mechanical parts to degrease, clean and re-lubricate. Reworked rubber parts. De-oxydized all potentiometers and swtiches, trimpots, tube sockets and contacts, cleaned and demagnetized all elements in the tape path; checked and tweaked all adjustments. Thorough and complete testing, Physical cleaning and detail work. Condition: Excellent and reliably working condition - machine recently overhauled to fully work in every aspect. The heads of this machine show only minor wear, so perform excellently. Physical Condition: Very Clean and excellent. Looks like new at the inside of the case. The outside of the case has a few signs of age and use (what has not at that age), but there are no major scuffs scratches etc. The unit looks quite nice. Will be glad to e-mail higher resolution photos. Overall cosmetic condition: 9/10 Lot: 1 Webcor compact Deluxe "portable" vacuum tube tape recorder, microphone Price: $249.00 (reflects actual work time spent to refurbish this deck) A nice and special Find! - Alone it's vintage looks will be delightful! .... more items below! .... more items below! |
Portable Battery Operated Tape Recorder ![]() Description: Most folks buy this sort of thing to replace their original machine to play those old recordings again, but this machine won't work for that, as it's based on constant reel speed not on tape speed. It is rather a deck for musicinans who want to record in the ultimate LOW-Fi sound. The deck is really cheezy with tinny crunchy sound, that has character (!) and drags a little, as made cheaply and rubber old - a piece of crap, but includes all needed and was repaired to work as good as it can: A Mic is hardwired and can be pulled out; Someone added input and output jacks at one time (which I re-worked). Operates on batteries only and includes vintage tape + reels. Mono. Work performed I spent about $100 in labor on this. If you can, please pay $100. Mojo will reward you. If you can't, I'll take as much as you have, but not less than $55. Below that: make your own tape deck form beer bottles - No way! Lot: recorder with mic, original box + styrofoam packing. No manual (unit is self explainatiry) and the lid shown on the box is missing. Works, as described and shown above. Price: 55.00 - Get the ultimate low-fi sound. About Reel to Reel Tape and recording formats: ©2008MarRsingStarUltraelectronicactive.com Open reel tape is most common in 1/4" or 1/2" width and can be recorded in various different recording formats. The basiscs are: the more room for the audio material physically on the etape, the better it sounds. This can be achieved by recording speed and track width - in other words how much space a track takes form the width of a tape. The more material can be squeezed onto a tape the longer it will play, but will result in lower quality recordings. Proffessional machines thus record at 15 or 38 IPS in half track or ful track format, where consumer machines most often record in quater track format at 3 3/4 or 7 1/2 IPS. Recordings can be made in mono on one of the availalbe track, or in stereo, where stereo recordings usually cut the availalbe recording time in half, as 2 tracks are recorded at the same time. It is also important to consider what maximum reel size a deck can work with. Higher speed professional machines can often accept 10 1/2" reel sizes, while consumer decks are often limited to 7" reel sizes. ©2008MarRsingStarUltraelectronicactive.com How much material can a 7" Tape reel hold? ©2008MarRsingStarUltraelectronicactive.com Depending on recording speed and track usage open reel tapes can hold vastly varying amounts of material. If recorded at 15 IPS and in stereo and in half track format can hold about 22 minutes of material, OR (!) if recorded at 1 7/8 IPS in mono and in quarter track format and recorded on all 4 tracks, can provide 12 hours of audio material! The average user however records their tapes in stereo quarter track format , and in either 3 3/4 or 7 1/2 IPS. This translates to 45 Minutes for 7 1/2 IPS, or 90 Min. for 3 3/4 IPS Per SIDE (!). Here all of the details again: One 7" Open Reel Tape contains about 1800' of tape and will play in stereo: 45 Minutes @ 7 1/2 IPS, 90 Min. @ 3 3/4 IPS or 180 Minutes @ 1 7/8 IPS, PER SIDE (!) - so double the time if recorded double sided; AND: if recorded in mono: (as there are 2 tracks per side for quater track width) double the time AGAIN!. © 2008 ultraelectronicactive.com - linking to this page in it's entirety permitted - All else requires permission. Please note that Reel to Reel tape decks are among the most work intensive items to restore as mechanics, electronics and alignments have to be perefect and to work perfectly together. Now to make matters even worse in terms of required work time, almost all of these decks shown here are point to point wired circuitry, which takes tremendous time to re-work on top of the above. In restoration work I usually replace ALL capacitors and many of the rubber parts. Due to these large amounts of required work time, these items are only availalable with a restoration order from Januarry through August. All other times please check in with me for a turn around time estimate, which in these times may be 4-16 weeks. $395 to $1200 ea. If wishing to purchase any of these items in original "AS FOUND" condition, yes, but please make me an offer high enough that I absolutely cannot refuse to sell. If shopping for lowest price I am sorry to say that I am not your man. Not in a hurry to sell, and it took years to find these amazing historic specimnes. I prefer to sell to someone who will buy one of these to appreciate and actually USE (fully refurbished) for soulful music for decades to come! This page is about the soul and beauty that is missing in modern machines! Soul can't be bought with money. Those after money can't really understand that. If you listened and cherrished music that was recorded before 1950 (or ideally even earlier!), you will know exactly what I mean. I have the same passion about these decks and will put into it to get it working right - for what ever it takes to do the job right the first time! ![]() Inquire --->>> Please refer to item nubers AND (!) the type of unit listed in picture !
