For 500 years, a solemn valley oak tree grew its roots deep and thick into the soil in northern California, near a town known as Flournoy. Then one night this ancient living tree was struck by lightening. Its bark skin was singed, and its wood was petrified, to never be burnt or split. When this tree crashed into a creek it weighed over nine thousand, seven hundred pounds, had a diameter of four feet, and was thirteen feet long.

In the spring of 1996, Michael J. Murphy, a master craftsman, father and creative drum maker, felt an awakening through the sight of the fallen tree, about to be discarded, and saw the Drum within it. There followed three and a half years of immeasurable devotion; slowly and painstakingly hollowing, sanding, shaping and carving the flesh of this ancient tree. Cattle hides were soaked and scraped for several days and finally ready to be stretched onto the log's ends and secured with tacks, completing the process of creating the gigantic drum. To allow the drum to become mobile, a special trailer was constructed to transport its nineteen hundred pounds. The love of many people came together to experience the crafting of this huge log drum which became named the Talk'n' Tree Drum.

Since it's completion the Talk-N-Tree and it's builder traveled through the northern states to visit festival, educational events, schools, parades, children's fairs and many others.
